Let the Environmental Assessments Begin Part II

Well....a year has gone by and I am still working on the methodology/proposal. The good news is that most of the proposal is completed, and I am finalizing the GIS methodology on the NW Atlanta study. The bad news comes with the discovery of a faulty backup drive and the loss of over 30 gb of air photos over the study area. Oh well...


I should have the methodologies completed by the first week of August with a proposal date sometimes in Mid-August.

As soon as the data becomes available, I will begin posting it at the main webpage http://www.lvrdapps.net

So much for best laid plans, but after 9 revisions, this proposal appears to be interesting...we will see after it has been passed around....

Let the Environmental Assessments Begin

Since May, I have been working on a paper discussing the feasibility of step function analysis of environmental features. This proposal paper will be posted here sometimes next week, and will be shortly followed up with the Thesis/Research proposal in August.

Of greater importance, will be the release of collected data to quantify the step functions discussed in the analysis paper. As compiled, data will be posted here to allow O&M instructors to compare their analysis vs the model and submit feedback.

The challange, as I see it, will be to provide enough data for analysis by O&M instructors on a single webpage without bogging down end users and allow feedback via comments and responses.

Examining Change in the Prevalence Models

In an attempt to examine new aspects of the Population I used ArcMap to calculate the total Low Vision population for the respected VISN's and more importantly examine the change in population. To measure these demographics, I utilized a technique called the Discontiguous Cartogram. This system displays change or population as a function of area. As a result, three new items have been added to the webpage.

First, I examined population change by changing VISN area. Therefore, as population increases or decreases, the VISN size would increase or decrease accordingly. This map focused upon the lower 48 states and extended from 1990-1996.

Next, I placed a hyperlink on the webpage for the VISN table of population and change to be downloaded if needed.

Finally, I examined the population of VISN 7 itself and measured the Visually Impaired population as a function of area.

While I am not sure of the success of these techniques, I felt it was worth the time to explore and post for comments.

Whew....Now for something completely different....

Well, I finally have cleared up my schedule and intend on ramping up production of a number of animation models based upon the Massof functions being provided by Bill.

As of a few minutes ago, I completed one of the 'Georgia' datasets, have it posted & linked and should have the others completed and posted by midweek.

I was able to receive some excellent feedback from UGA in regards to animation methods, as a result, I intend on applying some of their comments to the upcoming animation datasets.

Also, I know I have been promising this for a while now, but next weekend should be the first release of a series of 'Jaws capable' animations for visually impaired users.

Yesterday I found an interesting site on the Census webpage, in regards to traffic analysis data. As soon as I can clear up some of Mike's projects, I will take a look and see if it has any utility.

Speaking of utility, this summer I will continue my research on environmental factors of low vision/blind mobility. For the most part this will be mathmatical in nature, but any data that gets collected will be posted here.

Finally, on the data collection topic, I have a small script to collect stop signs and traffic lights, and will begin collecting those locations in a few days.

So Much for that Bright Idea

Bill noticed last week that this Blog required registration to add comments, so I guess I will keep it as a read only location for my notes and comments.

I have added a simpler message board that should be editable without registration.

Also, for the next week I will have my Training sessions upon the site, feel free to view, however, I will probably take down soon to rebuild.

As soon as I get caught up on my school applications, I will restart the dot density models for deployment on the site.
